SUMMARY:Parliamentary Procedure Bootcamp and Membership Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Click HERE to Register\nWould you like to have smoother and more effective meetings or become a better club member or officer? No matter what your level of understanding parliamentary procedure may be\, the Northern Virginia Marching and Gavel Society (NOVAMAGS) unit can help enhance that level. \nNOVAMAGS is conducting a parliamentary workshop of two sessions. The sessions are Saturday\, December 3\, and Saturday\, December 10\, from 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m on Zoom. The workshop is designed to enhance your knowledge of parliamentary procedure as well as prepare you to take the National Association of Parliamentarians® (NAP) membership exam. \nThe exam consists of 40 questions taken from a group of 100. All questions are based on information from Robert’s Rules of Order Newly Revised in Brief (RONRIB)\, third edition. The workshop will cover and review all information on the exam. The book can be purchased from your favorite bookstore\, Amazon\, or NAP® for less than $10. (RONRIB can be read in its entirety in about two hours.) \nAs a member of NAP®\, you can attend free workshops and webinars on various aspects of parliamentary procedure\, and learn how to help your organization achieve its purpose and mission more effectively. \nThe workshop is only $10. Membership in the National Association of Parliamentarians requires passing an exam on parliamentary procedure. This event will prepare you to pass the exam\, but you will need to register for the exam separately with NAP (https://parliamentarians.org)\, which has an additional cost.

DESCRIPTION:Our next meeting is Wednesday\, November 16\, 2022 via Zoom. \nThere will be two breakout sessions\, our regular Advance Education Session\, which will cover “Voting Basics and Standards & Alternative Methods” and our Basic Education Session\, which will cover “The importance of rules”\, How decisions are made at a meeting”\, and “Handling Motions and Debate” as outlined in RONRIB. \nAdvance Education Session \nPlease see below the Performance Expectations that should be reviewed in RONR 12th edition\, for Lesson 5a (Voting Basics and Standards & Alternative Methods) prior to attending the education session. \nPerformance Expectations on Voting \n7.1 Know the meaning of and how to calculate a majority vote\, a two-thirds vote\, a majority of the entire membership\, and a majority of the fixed membership as explained in RONR (12th ed.) 44:1–3\, 44:5–6\, and 44:9(b)\, including 44:9(bn1).\n7.2 Understand the two elements that define the bases for determining a voting result given in that define RONR (12th ed.) 44:7–8\, and 44:9(bn1) and identify what is required to modify the default bases as described in RONR (12th ed.) 44:10 \n7.3 Know the meaning of and how to calculate a plurality vote as explained in RONR (12th ed.) 44:11.\n7.4 Know and explain the effect of a tie vote\, and the rules concerning the chair’s participation in voting in RONR (12th ed.) 44:12–13. \n7.5 Know and identify the rights and obligations in voting\, and the rule regarding straw polls\, described in RONR (12th ed.) 45:1–2\, 45:6-8\, and 45:72.\n7.6 Know and explain the rules concerning abstention and voting on questions affecting oneself in RONR (12th ed.) 4:35 (last two sentences)\, and 45:3–5. \nPerformance Expectations (Standards & Alternative Methods) \n7.7 Know and apply the proper procedure and standard terminology for taking a vote by voice\, rising\, and show of hands\, including announcing the result\, as described in RONR (12th ed.) 4:36–49 4:37n11 has new material in the 12th ed.\n7.8 Know and apply the procedures for verifying a vote and counting a rising vote as described in RONR (12th ed.) 4:50–55 (4:53 has new 12th ed. material)\, and 45:14–15 45:14 has a tweaked rule in the 12th ed. \n7.9 Know and apply the rules concerning ballot voting described in RONR (12th ed.) 45:18–25 Substantial changes in 12th ed.\n7.12 Know and apply the rules for directing and conducting electronic or machine voting described in RONR 45:42–43 new material in 12th ed. \nBasic Education Session \nPurpose of This Basic Education Session is to prepare any provisional members for the NAP Membership Exam or those members just choosing to learn the basics of parliamentary procedure. At this education session\, each member will gain a basic overall understanding of the rules found in Robert Rules of Order Newly Revised 12th Edition and the basic rules that govern how to run a meeting.
